Lalibela is a full-service Ethiopian restaurant nestled on South Fairfax, a neighborhood known for its cultural variety and welcoming food spots in Los Angeles. The atmosphere here quietly balances authenticity with casual comfort—think crisp white tablecloths, modest but neat décor referencing traditional Ethiopian aesthetics, and an approachable dining room that often caters to both sit-down guests and a steady stream of takeout orders.

The restaurant is best suited for those curious about exploring Ethiopian cuisine beyond the usual shared platters. You’ll find interesting dishes such as Dro Tibs (chicken sautéed in berbere sauce), the signature spiced Injera, and vegetarian choices like the Fosolis Vegan with caramelized vegetables and jalapeño heat. People who appreciate a blend of traditional flavor with attentive seasoning will feel at home here. The menu includes some Asian-inspired fusion takes, like Tofu Tibs, adding an unexpected but thoughtful twist.

Visitors often highlight the friendly and helpful service, which goes a long way to making the experience feel welcoming—especially if you’re trying Ethiopian food for the first time. Expect some wait time during busier periods, perhaps because the kitchen focuses heavily on made-to-order plates and managing takeout, but the pace suits a relaxed social meal where conversation easily fills the time.

For anyone eager to experience communal Ethiopian eating customs with family or friends, Lalibela offers a genuine setting. There’s also a traditional coffee ceremony option, reflecting the local community’s connection to coffee culture, accompanied by spiced teas and unique beverage choices like mango or avocado shakes that balance the hearty seasoning of the food.

Lunch visitors might notice the airy seating area and the fairly quiet rush, while evenings probably lean more into group dining and full-flavored main courses such as the spicy Doro Wot. The restaurant’s location benefits from convenient free parking a block away, which adds to its appeal for those driving in from other parts of the city.

Overall, Lalibela works well for anyone with a taste for authentic Ethiopian dishes served in a tidy, approachable spot with staff who know their menu and care to guide guests. It’s particularly suited for people who enjoy slowing down their meal and sharing small plates in a clean, culturally respectful environment on a casual visit to Los Angeles’ Fairfax Avenue.

Nice Ethiopian place, with some interesting options beyond the traditional platters. Warning: the fish is an entire fish with head and bones, which isn’t noted on the menu. Staff is very friendly.

An excellent option if you are looking for traditional Ethiopian food. Their shakes of mango and avocado are great!

Delicious & beautiful sampler platter served in such a welcome setting with lovely crisp table cloths. The place was nice and clean and service was wonderful with an attentive lady who came to explain the selections to us. First visit for my elderly mom who loved it!

It was great! Seems like a to-go heavy location as the dining room for lunch was very open. Muna took good care of us. Helped with recommendations and is very nice. It does seem light on staff so be patient while waiting to be seated, maybe all hands on deck in kitchen for packing. Very clean and pretty bathroom! Free 2hr Parking is plentiful a block away. The decor feels authentic and atmospheric if a little worn but very appropriate and good. A very fun and mellow adventure.

Slow service, but the food is absolutely delicious. If you’re with a great group of friends or family, the time will pass quickly and you won’t even mind the wait. Highly recommend!

Absolutely delicious food, great for sharing. The bread that everything comes with is phenomenal. Highly recommend the Doro Wat.
